Improving on 2000’s Model: The 2001 Prizm Revisited

When you think of the “Chevrolet Prizm” what will usually come to mind for Chevrolet enthusiasts is quality, stability and lots of history. The Prizm has been one of the premier vehicles of the Chevrolet line for over ten years. It is an important car and the 2001 model is no exception. The Chevrolet Prizm falls into the sedan for the family category.
Under the Hood
The restyled Prizm Base is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a Borg Warner five-speed transaxle. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2000 version.
The Prizm uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are drum. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.
Statistics
The dimensions of the Prizm Base are 66.70 inches wide by 174.20 inches long. It sits 53.70 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 4 doors. The wheelbase of 97.10 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.
The listed retail price in 2001 (MSRP) was $16,220, with a dealer invoice cost of $14,955. This price is on target the industry average price for a four-door Sedan.
Fuel Efficiency
The fuel system for the 2001 Prizm is a MPI design, using gasoline fuel. The fuel flow is controlled by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 13.20 gallons.
The Prizm Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of 28 - 31 in-city driving and 32 - 38 when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid car, this was within normal parameters.
What We Think of the Chevrolet Prizm
The 2000 model began the promise of the Chevrolet Prizm. The 2001 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Chevrolet hopes that the Prizm Base will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
