Car of the Year for 2001: The Chrysler Neon Base

People who buy a Chrysler Neon are often happy with purchase. For over a decade, the Neon has been one of the mainstays of the Chrysler brand. This has always been a meaningful car, and the 2001 model is no different. A sedan for everyone in the household is what the Chrysler Neon delivers.

Chrysler Neon Engine Specs

The restyled Neon Base is equipped with a Chrysler 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that utilizes a total of 16 valves. The engine is paired with a Chrysler 5-speed transaxle. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chrysler.

The Neon uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are drum. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

The 2001 Neon’s traditional fuel system runs on gas. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected multi-port fuel injection style of design. The fuel tank holds 12.50 gallons.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Neon Base are 67.40 inches wide by 174.40 inches long. It sits a comfortable 56.00 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 4 doors. The wheelbase of 105.00 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The standard warranty period for the Neon is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 36 months or 36,000 miles respectively. This is standard in the sedan market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.

The listed retail price in 2001 (MSRP) was $12,715, with an invoice cost of $11,931. This price is above average of the industry average price for a four-door Sedan.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2001 Neon gets 31 - 33 miles/gallon on the highway and only 24 - 27 in the city. This is exceptional for a sedan car.

In 2000 and 2001 the Neon Base was availble in the exterior colors of Black Clearcoat, Bright Silver Metallic Clearcoat, Cinnamon Glaze Metallic Clearcoat, Dark Garnet Red Pearl Coat, Flame Red Clearcoat, Patriot Blue Pearlcoat, Salsa Red Pearlcoat, Shale Green Metallic, Steel Blue Pearl Coat, and Stone White Clear Coat. Additional options were made available by the factory.

We Think…

The 2000 model began the promise of the Chrysler Neon. The 2001 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Chrysler hopes that the Neon Base will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

No one is going to think that this is going to be a good buy 10 years from now.
