The 1999 Cavalier is an important vehicle to Chevrolet for the coupe market segment. The Base is a member of a series of four trim levels for the Cavalier which include Base, LS, RS, and Z24. The two-door car with its front-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Chevrolet. There is strong competition from vehicles from Toyota.
Performance
The Cavalier Base is equipped with a General Motors 2.2 liter four-cylinder engine that utilizes 8 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a Hydra-Matic 3-speed Transaxle. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chevrolet.
Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Cavalier has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are drum. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.
The 1999 Cavalier’s normal fuel system runs on bi-fuel. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected multi-port fuel injection (MFI) style of design. The fuel tank holds 15.00 gallons.
Cavalier Base Statistics
The Cavalier is 180.70 inches long, 68.70 inches wide, and 53.00 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 104.10 inches. It is able to seat 5 comfortably.
The standard warranty period for the Cavalier is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 36 months or 36,000 miles respectively. This is standard in the coupe market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.
The listed retail price in 1999 (MSRP) was $11,916, with an invoice cost of $11,141. This price is slightly higher than the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.
Fuel Efficiency
The Cavalier Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of 23 - 24 in-city driving and 29 - 34 when it came to long-distance. Being a bi-fuel-powered hybrid car, this was subpar.
In 1998 and 1999 the Cavalier Base was availble in the exterior colors of Aquamarine Blue Metallic, Black, Bright Red, Bright White, Cayenne Red Metallic, Green Metallic, Medium Green Metallic, Medium Opal Blue Metallic, Medium Sunset Gold Metallic, and Sandrift Metallic.
In Summary
The 1999 model year was unsuccessful for the Chevrolet Cavalier. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the Base version) meant that buyers had several options to choose from..

No less than 5 of my friends have a Cavalier. I can’t say more than two of them are happy with it…
